THE MUM’S GUIDE TO PARTY DRESSING

New Year is fast approaching and with no time to plan what to wear – here’s how to style it out

Main image: Paramount Pictures

The countdown is nearly upon us, whether you are going out-out or spending most of the evening at a friends telling the children to go to bed and stop jumping on the furniture, you will need to do more than just switch your shoes. As sequins and stilettos will not get more than one wear, these are the quick, clever buys to take you from Auld Lang Syne well into 2018 in style.

1

THE VELVET SMOKING JACKET: BODEN

Party dresses? Don’t waste your time. A velvet smoking jacket is worth 10 sequinned little numbers. Relaxed, luxuriant – the sartorial equivalent of a cool glass of champagne – you will look and feel effortlessly elegant rather than trussed-up and silly. Mix up the textures by teaming with silk or satin tux trousers (then later with jeans for drinks with the school mums). Tailored is good; belted is better. Boden’s my choice (but be quick as they are down to the last few). You could also try Ghost and Mother.

“Effortlessly elegant whether you are sipping champagne or wrestling the little ones into bed.”

THE LUXURY FLATS: MANGO

Prada’s velvet mules are the ultimate choice for fashionable revellers – they are also £470. So moving swiftly on, Mango has these beautiful bow-tied flats that, if you squint, could be the real thing. High heels are, let’s face it, a step too far – you will only have to take them off on friends’ floors or if you want to dance post midnight. Worth looking at however is Zara’s collection of embellished flats that will also work for day to joyfully dress up your denim.

“Heels are a step too far - Mango is teeming with elegant embellished flats.”

THE TUXEDO TROUSERS: JIGSAW

Evening trousers don’t come more stylish or easy-to-wear than Jigsaw’s contrast-stitched marvels. In luxurious crepe satin, they somehow manage to skim your curves rather than clinging to all of those turkey dinners. The perfect length to team with flats (no need to have them turned up) and the contrast stitching miraculously elongates your silhouette. With pockets and a little bit stretch – they are every mother’s party-dressing must-buy.

“Luxurious, leg-lengthening, wear-forever tuxedo trousers that work perfectly with flats - what's not to like?”

THE ULTIMATE JEWELS: & OTHER STORIES

Necks, yes, wrists, maybe, but no earlobe should be naked this New Year. For drop-down gorgeous bling that looks deceptively costly, The Outnet is a great hunting ground. You can find conversation-starting designs by Kenneth Jay Lane and Elizabeth Cole at high street prices. Another great source is & Other Stories. My favourite? These asymmetric pearl earrings – sophisticated but just that little bit different.

“Earrings should be the dazzling main event of your outfit in all their shoulder-grazing glory.”

THE FINISHING TOUCH: GUCCI

There is no point splashing out on a designer evening bag that will be worn maybe once. Much better to fasten your Gucci belt and get in the style fast lane – Just think of the number of outfits it will liven up with cinched-in style. Over a dinner jacket for evening, an oversized knit for day – it’s going to be my next belting investment.

“If you are going to invest in a designer accessory this is what you need.”

— Belt, £235, Gucci at Matches
