HOW TO MAKE EVERY DAY A DUVET DAY

Rejoice mamas! The sartorial equivalent of a big bear hug has just become the height of cool

Christmas has come early with the greatest gift the fashion world could bestow: ladies, I present to you duvet dressing. The next best thing to staying in bed. It is the cosiest, lightest and now (rejoice) most stylish everyday coat that is going to hug you until spring.

The high street is teeming with them. Suddenly standing on that freezing rugby pitch, hopping outside the school gates and dashing to the supermarket to get milk in the pitch black will become a thing of joy as you are cocooned in insulated heaven.

Last winter the editors and street style stars were working the oversized duvet design before the delighted paparazzi. This year the trend is gathering pace with everyone from Topshop to Stella McCartney creating their puffed up way to look cool and stay warm.

Even the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were spotted wearing his ‘n’ hers styles while out on their recent royal duties – though theirs were more fitted than Michelin man.

If you are looking for luxury of the finest Goose down-filled or pure silk variety – Ienki Ienki at Browns and Olivia Von Halle – are the places (pictured below). If this is your first foray into duvet dressing, there is plenty of nylon to wrap yourself up in and throw in the washing machine when things have gone a bit flat.

For proportions don’t be afraid to go XXL – the bigger the better as there is nothing worse than a puffer jacket that’s too tight.

Look for a dramatic neckline, rounded shoulders and a fit that is more like a pillowy bomber jacket.

If you feel the cold, a longer length can work especially if you try adding a belt – it will give it a modern update and stop you being swallowed by a sea of nylon.

Sporty extras like trainers and a knitted pom pom hat will work and keep your bottom half slim rather than loose fitting.

Then wrap up and tackle the day – we have picked the seven styles that we think are good quality and the right style – in other words worth getting out of bed for. Enjoy!

1

THE PRET A PARENT MUST BUY: MANGO

On those damp, depressing mornings when all you want to do is bury your head under the covers, this is the coat you need. It’s a great colour, it’s the right shape and it’s a reasonable price – if it’s too cheap the quality will be questionable. This is the one I’m investing in.

“On those damp depressing mornings - this is the coat you need.”

THE SPORTY PUFFER: GANNI

Ganni is where the cool girls on the hunt for something different shop. The laid-back Danish label is all about timeless design with an edge – hence this is one of the best puffer jackets we’ve found. We love the cool contrast zip, it will keep you warm in the wind and the rain but just has that little bit extra style – a definite favourite.

“It's as fabulous as it is functional - we love the colours. It's the ultimate off-duty style.”

THE WET LOOK PUFFER: MONKI

The wet-look high shine party puffer is a bit OTT but in a good way. This is the style you might wear in the evening to make a change from your done-to-death faux fur or biker jacket to give it a modern lift and make sure you won’t be the one freezing at the end of the night. Monki are great at playful design and they are so inexpensive it’s worth taking a punt.

“For colour or unusual finishes especially worn after dark Monki is great.”

THE SLIM-LINE PUFFER: WHISTLES

This style would work really well if you are petite and don’t want to be swamped in gargantuan proportions. It’s neat, easy-to-wear and the colour-blocking gives it a cool, retro vibe. Whistles also do a versatile puffer gillet- both are great for running around in jeans and trainers. This gets a big tick from us.

“We love the colour-blocking and neat shape - this is a great style if you are petite.”

THE LUXURY PUFFER: IENKI IENKI

Move over Michelin Man, Ukranian brand Ienki Ienki (pronounced Yenki) is taking the light-as-a-feather jacket to new luxurious heights. With winters that can reach well below freezing they know a thing or two about keeping warm. We love their signature rounded shape and strong colours. The label’s founder Dima Ievenko describes the coats as “big and cosy with a strong accent around the waist”. We can’t wait to wrap up in one.

“This is the cool girl of the puffer world.”

THE POLISHED PUFFER: MARKS & SPENCER

The sporty puffer can be polished – just take this velvet design from Autograph at Marks & Spencer. It’s feminine, easy-to-wear but with plenty of volume. A really great buy.

“We love the luxurious polish of the velvet finish.”

THE SUPER-COSY: TOPSHOP

If you really feel the cold this faux-fur lined puffer is one to try. Topshop has maxed-out on the cosiness and it comes with a faux-fur-trimmed detachable hood – it definitely should be given house room.

“Max-out on the insulation with this cool faux-fur-lined Topshop style.”
