DATE NIGHT: SKATE AT SOMERSET HOUSE

WHAT

Ice skating in the courtyard of Somerset House with Fortnum & Mason

PRICE

Tickets start from £7.50. Mulled wine, sharing mince pie with clotted cream and two Skate tickets, £56

WHY

Is there anything more magical in the run up to Christmas than gliding beneath the lantern-lit majesty of the 18th century courtyard of Somerset House? It is one of the city’s unmissable traditions. This year, Skate Lates, a series of evening music events, will see contemporary DJs and artists take over the rink-side decks to provide the perfect date-night setting. Afterwards you can do some shopping in the Fortnum & Mason Christmas Arcade or simply cosy up in the Alpine lodge with champagne, mulled wine or a chocolate fondue and mince pie to share.

WHERE

On the Strand, a quick walk across Waterloo Bridge or a stone’s throw from Embankment tube.

WHERE TO EAT

Skye Gyngell’s Spring restaurant in the House’s new wing would be the perfect end to the evening – dine on Ricotta dumplings with spaghetti squash and spigarello – and don’t leave without checking out the amazing pink tiles in the bathrooms.

WHEN

Skating opens at 8.45am but the early evening slot, when all the lights are shining, is when it really comes alive.

HOW ROMANTIC?

It doesn’t get much more romantic (as long as you don’t fall over). Oh, and maybe leave your bobble hat at home.
